Arrows – all weights and sizes…

We try to make our wooden arrows to your specifications, so let us know what you need and we’ll see if we can help.

We can make arrows spine matched from 20lbs to 70lbs to within +/- 1lb. For arrows from 70lbs-120lbs we can match them to within +/- 5lbs. For arrows over 120lbs we can get them reasonably close (lets face it – you’re shooting broom handles at those kind of weights!). If you have specific spine matching requirements, please contact us and let us know – we can usually help.

Arrow Shafting is usually Sitka Spruce, which we find to be an excellent, strong and lightweight option. We can also provide other arrow woods such as Port Orford Cedar (POC), pine, ash and depending upon availability sometimes birch and poplar. We also usually have a good selection of bamboo shafting in stock. Size range includes 1/4″, 5/16″, 11/32″, 23/64″, 1/2″ and a few weird and metric sizes depending on requirements. Most arrows are parallel, but where necessary we can provide tapered and barrelled shafts. We tend not to do footed shafts, but if you really really want some, we can organise them.

Lenghts – well this is a simple one – any size up to 31″ shaft length is pretty much standard. Above this, we can do bamboo and sometimes birch, pine or ash up to 34″. Longer than this and we may need a bit of time to source things for you, but short of chopping a bit out of each arm….!

Nocks for arrows vary widely – the simplest way is to put plastic nocks on them, but we can also self-nock, re-inforced self-nock with either twine, silk, horn or hardwood, or we can provide complete horn nocks.

As far as piles, points, bodkins and broadheads go – we’ve got a pretty good range, from simple machine made points through to machined bodkins, drop forged bodkins and broadheads to hand-forged bodkins and broadheads. If you’ve got any specific requirements, please let us know.

Fletching options are pretty wide too – if it’s commercially available we’ll get hold of it for you (we keep a few varieties in stock at all times, others we have to order in). We can also provide hand-cut fletchings suitable for BLBS or English Warbow Society arrows. We normally use standard fletching glue, but when requested have used fletching tape and for the real purists we can use traditional hide size glues. We can also bind feathers with linen thread or silk, and we’ve been known to bind feathers with silver wire! For the true medeivalists we can coat the binding with beeswax and verdigris.

Finishing options are pretty much infinite – from simple oil and wax, through woodstains and flexible varnishes. As a rule we tend to use 3-4 coats of danish oil – this allows for the most natural finish to the arrows, will age with time and can be very simply cared for. For those who prefer a traditional gloss finish, we can use a flexible exterior varnish with at least 3 coats.

Erm….I think that’s about it, but if you can think of anything else you want on your arrows (Ostritch fluflus? Gold leaf piles?) let us know – we should be able to help! You may also want to have a look at our Arrow Selection page to check what you need to know about draw length and spine.
